Carl Laemmle, the German-born film pioneer who founded Universal Pictures in 1912, is the figure this glass negative records. He was among the most visible studio heads of the silent era, known for building a company around star performers and for promoting his stars under their own names. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of work made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied newspapers with news photographs in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date for this image, so its exact moment is unknown, but the collection as a whole documents the press and celebrity culture of that time.
