Few pictures in the Bain collection show a former royal household in exile, but this glass negative shows the ex-Crown Prince and Princess of Germany during their stay in the Netherlands. Crown Prince Wilhelm left Germany after the monarchy fell in November 1918, and the Dutch government gave the family refuge. They later settled at Huis Doorn in 1920. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency, sold portraits like this one to newspapers, so the print reflects how the press followed the fallen German royals. The title comes from unverified caption information, so the exact occasion is uncertain.
