This portrait is catalogued under the name Prince Purachatra, a member of the Siamese royal family, though the record notes that the identification comes from unverified caption information from the Bain News Service. The Bain company was a New York news photography firm that supplied pictures of public figures, diplomats and events to newspapers in the early twentieth century, and its glass negatives form a large part of the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. Siamese princes often served as diplomats abroad during this period, when Siam was building relations with Western governments. Because the record gives no date, the exact occasion remains unknown, so the photograph is best read as a document of its time and its sitter's public role.
