The name Herma Dalossy comes from the Bain News Service's own caption cards and negative labels, and the record flags it as unverified, so it marks the picture's origin more than a confirmed identity. Bain's agency, founded in New York in 1899, supplied news photographs to newspapers and magazines, and its glass negatives were filed as working records of what the photographers covered. The George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress preserves these negatives as a broad view of American life in the early twentieth century.
