The title places this view at a wharf in Smyrna, but the Bain News Service attached that name from unverified data, so the location deserves some caution. Bain's agency, founded in New York around 1899, supplied news pictures to newspapers, and its glass negatives document ports, streets and people across the early twentieth century. Smyrna was a busy Aegean port, so a waterfront subject fits the kind of scene a news photographer would seek, though the record does not say who made this exposure or when.
