The name on this glass negative, Gustav Schutzendorf, comes from the Bain News Service's own negatives or caption cards, but the Library of Congress notes that it is unverified, so the sitter's identity remains uncertain. George Grantham Bain founded his New York agency around 1899 to supply newspapers with photographs of current events and notable people. Its glass negatives, sharp and easy to reproduce, show how press photographs were captioned and sent to editors in the early 1900s.
