The title on this glass negative, from the Bain News Service, names a queen of Yugoslavia, but the record gives no date, sitter's name, or setting, and the title itself is unverified. Bain's agency supplied news photographs to American newspapers from about 1900 to the early 1920s, so the picture likely shows a royal figure in the news during the period when the kingdom was taking shape after 1918. Yugoslavia became the official name in 1929. The glass plate format was standard for press work of that era, and its fragile emulsion explains why many Bain negatives show wear.
