Ethel Roosevelt, the younger daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt, sits for this portrait taken around June 1902, when she was about 11 years old. The photograph comes from the Frances Benjamin Johnston Collection, which holds many of the portraits Johnston made of the Roosevelt family during his White House years. Johnston was among the most prominent women photographers of her era, and her studio sittings of the first family were widely reproduced in the press. The print is worth noticing for its informal domestic character, which contrasts with the formal state portraits of the presidency.
