Ethel Roosevelt, the younger daughter of Theodore Roosevelt, appears here in a garden setting, a informal outdoor portrait that differs from the formal studio poses common for presidential families of the period. The photograph was made around June 17, 1902, when Theodore Roosevelt was in his first full year as president after William McKinley's assassination in September 1901. It comes from the Frances Benjamin Johnston Collection, whose photographer was a well-known chronicler of the Roosevelt household and of Washington society, and it is worth noticing how she used the White House grounds and private gardens to present the children as they lived rather than as formal figures of state.
