Automobiles and pedestrians crowd together on this roadway, with no clear division between them, which was typical of American streets around 1919. By then, millions of cars had been produced, most famously the Ford Model T, and older habits of walking and horse travel still shared the road with them. Traffic congestion was a new problem, and it helped push cities toward signals, lane markings, and driving rules in the following decade. The photograph is a useful record of that transition, when the automobile was taking over public roads.
