Rows of automobiles sit across the flat roof of a Buick sales and service building, a sight that grew more common as car ownership climbed in the mid-1920s. Urban land was expensive, so dealers often used rooftops and upper decks to hold inventory and customers' cars rather than spreading them over scarce street-level lots. The National Photo Company, which documented Washington, D.C., and its surroundings during these decades, made the picture in December 1925. It offers a useful glimpse of how the automobile trade was reshaping city space.
