Stephen A. Douglas, the Illinois senator known as the "Little Giant," sits for this whole-plate daguerreotype, a larger format that gave early portrait makers room to capture fine detail in a face and its surroundings. The plate was made in Mathew Brady's studio between 1844 and 1860, years when Douglas rose from state politics to national prominence and became a central figure in the debates over slavery in the territories. Its hallmark from J. Rousseau & Co., a Parisian-trained supplier of plates and cases, and a note on the back identifying the sitter, mark it as a careful studio product of the period.
