Thomas Sowerby Hamblin, who managed the Bowery theater in New York, sits turned slightly to the left in this head-and-shoulders study. The plate was made in Mathew Brady's studio sometime between 1844 and 1853, and its gold toning gives the face the warm, softened tone typical of the period. The identification rests on an engraving of Hamblin published in Odell's *Annals of the New York Stage*, and the record notes that this may be a copy daguerreotype, so it is best read as a likeness of the sitter made from another image rather than an original sitting.
