This engraved portrait shows Joseph Eggleston Johnston, the Virginia-born officer who rose to senior Confederate command. Its publisher, William Sartain, was a Philadelphia engraver known for his mezzotint work, and the print's exact date is uncertain, though it was likely made sometime between the 1860s and 1880s. Johnston commanded the Army of Northern Virginia until he was wounded at Seven Pines in 1862, and later led the Army of Tennessee against William T. Sherman's advance toward Atlanta in 1864. He surrendered to Sherman near Durham, North Carolina, in April 1865.
