Printed on a carte de visite mount with the imprint of Elias Dexter at 564 Broadway in New York, this engraved portrait shows James Longstreet, the Confederate general known to his men as "Old Pete." Longstreet commanded the First Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia, and he led its assault on the Union left at Gettysburg on July 2 and 3, 1863. After the war, his decision to join the Republican Party and support Reconstruction made him a target of Lost Cause writers, who blamed him for the defeat there. The publisher's date is only given as a range between 1860 and 1890, so the print likely dates from the years when such mounted portraits were sold widely.
