Lee's headquarters at Gettysburg, the Confederate command post the general used during the battle in early July 1863, is the subject of this stereograph. W.H. Tipton & Co., a Gettysburg firm, photographed and published it as No. 573 in a series of battlefield views sold to visitors and veterans in the years after the fighting. Stereo cards like this were paired and viewed through a stereoscope to create a three-dimensional effect, which made them popular parlor and tourist items. The record dates the card only to between 1863 and 1890, but the site's association with Lee and the battle gave it lasting interest as a place of pilgrimage.
