Taken near Kotzebue, a community on Kotzebue Sound in northwestern Alaska, this photograph shows berry pickers bundled in heavy fur coats, a reminder of how the cold shaped even the brief summer season of gathering. Edward S. Curtis made it around 1929 for *The North American Indian*, where it appears in volume 20. Picking wild berries was a seasonal part of subsistence life for Inupiat families along the Arctic coast, and Curtis's pictures of such everyday work were meant to record a way of life he believed was changing quickly.
