This bird's-eye view looks down on the White House from the west, a side of the building that was changing in these years. The executive offices added in 1902 stood on this wing, and the view shows how the grounds and surrounding streets were laid out in the decades after. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington firm that photographed the capital's buildings and streets for commercial sale in the early twentieth century. Because the record dates it only to between 1909 and 1932, it offers a useful, if approximate, snapshot of the presidential compound during the Taft, Wilson, Harding, and Coolidge years.
