The west terrace of the White House, shown here from the roof of the Executive Offices next door, was one of the most photographed views of the executive mansion in the early twentieth century. The vantage point looks down onto the terrace and its lawn, giving a clear sense of how the grounds were laid out before the major rebuilding of the 1940s. This print belongs to the National Photo Company Collection, a commercial photographic firm that produced views of Washington landmarks for sale to visitors and publishers, and its dating to between 1909 and 1932 places it in the years when the Taft and Hoover administrations and the Coolidge era shaped daily life at the mansion.
