Stephen A. Douglas, the Illinois senator who became famous for his debates with Abraham Lincoln and his battle over popular sovereignty in the territories, was born in Brandon, Vermont, in 1813. The house shown here marks that birthplace, a modest New England homestead of the sort that dotted the Vermont countryside in the early nineteenth century. Douglas was born in the town, but his family left Vermont when he was a boy, and he spent his career in Illinois. Pictures of such birthplaces were often made after a famous person's rise, when local pride and national interest turned an ordinary house into a landmark.
