This 1936 silkscreen print turns attention to the cellar, urging readers that cellar ceilings must be fire-retarded and that cellars must be kept clean. It was produced under the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration and carries the sponsorship of Mayor Fiorello La Guardia and Fire Commissioner Langdon W. Post. The poster reflects a New York effort to reduce household fires by pairing fire-resistant construction with tidy storage, treating fire prevention as both a building question and a domestic one. The artist signed only with the monogram MW, and the poster was stamped with a date of April 1937 on its back.
