Keep clean" is a 1936 silkscreen poster from the Federal Art Project, part of the federal relief program's effort to carry public health messages through bold graphics that people could take in at a glance. Its subject headings tie it to hygiene and health care in New York State during the 1930s, when public health campaigns were urging cleanliness in crowded cities and small towns alike. Silkscreen allowed the project to print large editions cheaply, so posters like this one could be displayed in post offices, storefronts and other public spaces. The verso carries a stamp dated January 5, 1939, a reminder that copies stayed in circulation for years after they were first printed.
