Few posters of the 1890s pair an American humorist with a medieval French saint, but this one does: it advertises Mark Twain's book about Joan of Arc, the young visionary who led French forces at Orléans in 1429 and was burned at the stake two years later. The color lithograph is credited to Eugène Grasset, the Swiss-born Paris designer known for his decorative Art Nouveau work on posters and books. Twain considered his novel about Joan one of his most serious literary efforts, and the poster reflects the period's habit of using bold illustrated advertising to promote new books. The record also lists French soldiers among its subjects, a reminder of how often Joan's story is told through the war around her.
