Central Park in Manhattan is the setting here, and the title, "Preparing for a Drive," points to one of the park's most familiar pleasures in the late 1800s and early 1900s: the carriage ride. The park, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux and opened in the 1850s and 1860s, was built with winding drives meant for horse-drawn carriages, so that wealthy New Yorkers could see and be seen while moving slowly through its landscape. Scenes like this one capture the rituals of that leisure world, when getting ready for an outing meant tending to horses, harness, and carriage before setting off. Notice the care taken with the equipment, which says as much about status as about the park itself.
