Anaheim in 1915 was a small agricultural town in Orange County, built around the citrus and grape ranches that had been planted there since the colony was founded by German immigrants in 1857. Navel oranges were the crop that mattered most, and the packing houses and the Southern California Fruit Exchange shaped daily life, with the town's wealth tied to fruit prices and rail shipments. Anaheim had incorporated as a city in 1876 and was still a close-knit community of a few thousand people, where churches, schools, and the local Germanic social clubs remained important. The Pacific Electric interurban line linked the town to Los Angeles and the coast, which was beginning to change how residents traveled and shopped.
