Sgt. Nelson Huron and a Samoan guard stand together in this glass negative, one of the portraits the Bain News Service produced for its news and press files in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, and the title comes from caption cards the agency kept with its plates, so the names are unverified. Guard units of this period served in American Samoa, which came under U.S. naval administration around 1900, and their presence there reflected the newly claimed territory's need for local order. The posed, upright stance of the figures suggests a formal portrait meant to present an official face to the camera.
