The sitter is recorded as Dr. Simon Bucharoff, but the Library of Congress notes that this name comes from unverified data supplied by the Bain News Service on the negatives or caption cards. The glass negative belongs to the large body of work Bain's New York agency produced in the early 1900s, when it supplied newspapers and magazines with pictures of public figures and news events. Because the identity and date remain uncertain, the picture is best read as an example of that commercial practice, with its caption still open to research.
