Sir Alfred Butt, the British theater manager, appears here with Lady Butt and their son Kenneth, a family portrait that stands apart from the many stage and celebrity pictures on this board. Butt was a prominent London theater figure who ran major West End houses, and his pictures often circulated in the press as the trans-Atlantic theater trade grew in the early twentieth century. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of glass negraphs made by the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied images to newspapers. The title comes from caption information the agency recorded, which has not been independently verified, so the names and relationships should be read with that in mind.
