The surname could refer to a person, a subject, or a studio, and the record does not say which. George Grantham Bain founded his news photo agency in New York around 1900, and it supplied newspapers with pictures of public figures, events and city life. Glass negatives of this size, 5 by 7 inches or smaller, were a common working format of the period, which makes the collection useful for seeing how press photography developed.
