The only identifying detail in this record is the title, "Sameroff," a surname that Bain News Service caption information supplied without verification, so the subject's identity and the scene itself remain uncertain. The negative is a glass plate, the format that dominated press photography in the early twentieth century, when Bain's New York operation supplied newspapers and magazines with pictures of news figures, public events and everyday city life. The collection came to the Library of Congress as a large body of these negatives, and many plates in it lack complete dates or sitter names, which is why researchers often rely on comparing the plate's format and processing with other Bain images.
