Dated April 19, 1912, this view shows the Cunard liner Carpathia's bow with two tugboats at her side. Days earlier, the ship had reached the scene of the Titanic's sinking and picked up survivors from the lifeboats, and her New York arrival drew crowds and newspaper coverage. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a working news photographer who documented ships, people and events in New York in the 1900s and 1910s. Its caption card lists the subject simply as shipping, but the photograph is a reminder of the rescue that followed the Titanic disaster.
