The foreground bow of the whaler Grayhound fills much of this view, pulling attention to the ship's heavy construction rather than to open water. The caption card dates it to September 18, around 1917, though that date is unverified. Steam whalers of that period, including fleets working out of San Francisco and New Bedford, hunted bowhead and right whales in northern waters, and their strengthened hulls were built to push through ice. The bow's bracing and the vessel's sturdy profile show a ship made for hard work in cold seas.
