This stereograph shows a workshop in Damascus, Syria, where artisans cut and fitted mother-of-pearl into wooden furniture and boxes, a craft the title calls "the beautiful inlaid pearlwork of the Orient." The card is dated December 14, c1903, and was copyrighted by William H. Rau, a Philadelphia photographer who made travel views for home stereoscope viewers. Its subject headings also point to child labor, which was common in workshops of this kind, so the picture offers a glimpse of both a prized craft and the working conditions behind it.
