The title gives this fall a height of 2,634 feet, a figure printed on the card itself and one that helped make Yosemite Falls a standard subject for nineteenth-century travelers. The card belongs to the Watkins New Series of Pacific Coast Views, made from Carleton Watkins's negatives and issued in 1879 by the publisher William I. Marshall. Viewed through a stereoscope, the two slightly offset images gave the falls and the valley walls a convincing sense of depth, which is why such cards sold so widely to people who would never see the valley themselves.
