Few subjects drew more 19th-century viewers than Yosemite Falls, and this stereograph sets the falls against their own reflection in the Merced River, a mirror-like effect that photographers prized for its calm contrast with the roaring cataract. The card is part of William I. Marshall's "Glories of the Yosemite, California" series, issued in the 1870s when stereoviews were a popular parlor entertainment and Yosemite Valley was becoming a national showcase. Paired images like this one gave viewers a sense of depth and helped turn the valley into one of the most recognizable landscapes in the country.
