Dennis, on the south side of Cape Cod in Barnstable County, was a town of fishermen, cranberry growers, and summer boarders in 1943. Its villages, including Dennis Port, West Dennis, and South Dennis, lived partly from shellfish, salt hay, and the cranberry bogs that stretched across the low ground, while summer visitors filled the cottages near the shore. Gasoline rationing, in force since 1942, cut into the tourist trade that many Cape families depended on, and wartime patrols and the nearby military reservation brought new traffic and uncertainty to the peninsula. A bird's-eye view from this year shows a community that people knew as a quiet seaside town, its streets and harbor set between salt marsh and the open bay.
