Hyannis, on the south shore of Barnstable on Cape Cod, looked much as it does on this 1939 bird's-eye view, with its village streets, harbor, and surrounding woodland. By then the village had been a rail stop for more than eight decades, since the Cape Cod branch of the railroad reached it in 1854, and its harbor served as the departure point for steamers to Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard. Summer visitors filled the inns and cottages each season, while year-round residents depended on fishing, cranberry growing in the nearby bogs, and the trades that supported a small resort town. The Great Depression had pinched Cape incomes through the 1930s, and the hurricane of September 1938 had recently battered the South Shore and Cape coasts, so people in 1939 were still measuring their town against that storm and the hard years before it.
