Hyannis, a village in the town of Barnstable on the south side of Cape Cod, was the commercial center of the Cape in 1939, though the county seat remained in the older village of Barnstable. The railroad had brought summer visitors and freight to the village for generations, and its harbor handled the steamers that carried passengers and goods to Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard. Fishing, cranberry growing, and the summer trade sustained local families through the lean years of the Depression, when federal work relief crews were still building roads and public buildings across the region. Residents knew Hyannis as the gateway to the Cape's resort towns, a place where Main Street shops, church steeples, and the working waterfront stood close together.
