In 1907 Ann Arbor was a college town of brick and stone shaped largely by the University of Michigan, whose students and faculty formed a substantial part of the community. The local economy depended on the university, retail trade, and the Michigan Central Railroad line that linked the city to Detroit and Chicago. Football had become a major draw, and coach Fielding Yost had built a program that pulled crowds from across the state and beyond. Ferry Field, the university's athletic grounds, had opened only the year before, giving the team a home venue large enough for alumni, townspeople, and visitors who came in by train for the afternoon. A game against the University of Pennsylvania was the kind of event that filled those stands.
