In 1904, Ann Arbor was a small university town in southeastern Michigan, its life shaped by the University of Michigan and by the rail lines that tied it to Detroit and Chicago. The title pairs the town with Chicago, which suggests a contest between Michigan and its Illinois rival, and by then intercollegiate football had become a major draw for students, alumni, and townspeople alike. Under coach Fielding Yost, who had led Michigan's football program since 1901, the sport was building a regional following that filled stands and drew travelers by train. Lawrence, the Chicago firm that made the photograph, was known for group and crowd views of such events, and many buyers wanted them as keepsakes of a game or a school year. Beyond the stadium, the town's economy still rested on the university, local trade, and the steady flow of students and visitors.
