Few views in the Yellowstone geyser basins show the ground itself as clearly as this one, where pale sinter mounds rise in stepped rims around the hot pools. Sinter is silica deposited from mineral-laden water as it cools, and over centuries it builds the terraces, lips and cones that give the thermal areas their sculpted look. The shallow pools here are fed by the same underground heat that powers the nearby geysers, and their colors come from heat-loving microbes that thrive in the warm water. Visitors of the early twentieth century often photographed such terraces as evidence of the park's unusual geology, and the scene remains a reminder of how fragile these formations are to foot traffic.
