Held in Boston in 1965, the American Federation of Arts biennial convention brought museum directors, curators, and art educators from across the country together to discuss how art was shown and taught. The federation had been founded in 1909 to organize traveling exhibitions and support art education, and its conventions became a regular meeting place for people in those fields. Boston, with its long-established museums and universities, was a fitting host city. Images from such gatherings often preserve the people, displays, and settings that defined the mid-1960s art world.
