The Boston American League club of 1903 was the team that would go on to win the first modern World Series that fall, though the photograph itself captures the squad before that run. The Americans had only joined the American League in 1901 under the name Boston Americans, and by 1903 they were a young franchise trying to establish itself against the older National League clubs in the same city. Team portraits of this era were posed formally, with players in heavy wool uniforms and caps, and they offer a useful look at how early professional baseball presented itself to the public.
