Advertising the Federal Art Gallery in Boston, this poster reflects the Federal Art Project's effort during the Depression to bring visual art to ordinary audiences. The Index of American Design, a project within that program in the 1930s, employed artists to record American decorative arts, furniture, textiles and folk objects in carefully detailed watercolors, an effort to document craft traditions. WPA posters of this era were often screenprinted in bold, flat color, so their graphic simplicity is worth noticing alongside the messages they carried.
