The long format sets this print apart: at 16 by 46 inches, it spreads the falls across a wide field, and it was made on silver printing-out paper, a process in which the image forms through direct exposure to light rather than chemical development. William Herman Rau, a Philadelphia photographer known for a large body of Niagara views, made it, and it was registered for copyright on January 21, 1896. By the 1890s the falls had drawn tourists for most of a century, and panoramic prints like this one offered a sweep of the cataract that a single small view could not match.
