The "White Borders" title on this card is a Library staff label, and it refers to the plain white frame around the painted player portrait, which sets it apart from other cards in the T206 series. The American Tobacco Company issued the set around 1909 to 1911, slipping the cards into cigarette packs as stiffeners and as an enticement to buy. Its more than 500 subjects make it one of the largest sets of early baseball cards. This example comes from the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection, which preserves the tobacco-era cards that later became prized by collectors and historians of the game.
