The coffin shown here sits on a caisson, the horse-drawn carriage that was long used to carry the remains of soldiers and officers in military funerals. The record gives the name Kearny but no date, and the title comes from caption information the Bain News Service supplied, which the Library of Congress has not independently verified. The Bain News Service, active in New York and Washington in the early 1900s, sent photographers to cover public events, including funerals of prominent people. Glass negatives like this one preserve fine detail, so the harness, the draped casket, and the crowd around the procession can be studied closely.
