The only identifying detail this glass negative offers is its title, C.W. Billings, which the Bain News Service recorded on its negatives or caption cards. The Library of Congress notes that this information is unverified. The negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the work of a New York news photography agency that supplied pictures of public figures, performers, disasters and city life to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, so the plate is best understood as one of the many small glass negatives the agency made for quick newspaper reproduction, a format widely used in press work before flexible film replaced it.
