A colored engraving of an Iroquois man, the figure is labeled "Sauvage Iroquois" and comes from plate 29 of a French travel compendium published in Paris in 1796. Jacques Grasset de Saint-Sauveur (1757-1810) drew the original, and J. Laroque engraved and colored the print. Such plates were part of a late eighteenth-century European fashion for costume studies of peoples across the world, which were often based on secondhand accounts and idealized or stereotyped depictions. Viewers today may note the gap between the title's wording and the Haudenosaunee peoples the image claims to show.
