Joseph Avery, shown stranded on rocks in the Niagara River in July 1853, is the figure that sets this daguerreotype apart from the many views of the falls made in the 1850s. The record's subject headings point to a marine accident and a drowning-related danger, so the picture belongs to a small group of mid-century images that documented local disasters rather than scenery alone. Each daguerreotype was a unique image on a silver-plated copper sheet, which makes this one a rare, direct record of a dangerous moment on the river above the falls.
